Shelton Advances In SCC Girls Basketball Playoffs
Fifth-seeded Gaels defeat No. 12 Hand 41-38 and will play again on Saturday in the quarterfinals
Alyssa Eannotti and Kelsey Pendagast each scored 11 points Thursday as No. 5 seed Shelton held off N0. 12 Hand 41-38 in the first round of the Southern Connecticut Conference girls playoffs.
Melissa Corraro added nine points for the Gaels, who improved to 15-6 and rebounded from Monday's 44-33 setback to Foran in the regular-season finale.
Shelton held leads of 11-10 after the first quarter and 26-20 at halftime. The Gaels extended their edge to 36-28 after three before the Tigers made a run in the final period.

In the quarterfinals on Saturday at West Haven, the Gaels will face the winner of Friday's clash between No. 13 Sheehan and No. 4 Sacred Heart Academy, who meet in the final first-round contest. Tip-off for Saturday's game is 1:45 p.m.
In other opening-round games Thursday, No. 6 Wilbur Cross defeated No. 11 Lyman Hall 66-63; No. 8 Cheshire routed No. 9 Amity 49-28; and No. 10 Foran bested No. 7 Guilford 52-43 in a minor upset.

The top three seeds - Mercy, Hillhouse and Career - had byes and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Cheshire takes on Mercy, Foran faces Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross battles No. 3 Career.
