Shelton Girls Basketball Team Drops Regular-Season Finale At Foran
Gaels look forward to SCC tournament following a 44-33 loss to the Lions
Shelton High School girls basketball coach Mary Piccirillo was speechless after the poor performance her team gave in its final regular-season game Monday night, a 44-33 loss against Foran in Milford.
“I can’t even say much because that wasn’t our basketball,” Piccirillo said. “I don’t know if we were just happy with we’ve done already and accomplished this season.”
The Gaels (14-6) started off slow in the first quarter and remained this way for the rest of the game, unable to establish a lead over the Lions (10-9).

“It was flat, poor, not our type of basketball game,” Piccirillo said.
It was Foran’s senior night and the Lions roared over the Gaels from the start, taking a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“Senior night with all these emotions, [Foran] played very well,” Piccirillo added.
The Lions continued to gain momentum as fans cheered when Lions’ sophomore Kelly Quinn sank a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left on the clock. The Lions finished the half with a 16-11 lead.
Three-pointers rained on the court in the third quarter. At the 6:40 mark, the Lions swooshed three back-to-back 3-pointers. The Gaels responded by scoring three consecutive 3-pointers, but still trailed 34-20 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Gaels went nearly three minutes without scoring a point.
The Lions surged to a 43-22 lead, their biggest lead of the game. The Gaels attempted to chase the Lions, but found themselves traveling home in defeat.
“That’s a game we should have won,” Piccirillo said. “It’s an all-around poor performance by every single player. I can’t think of one thing we did right.”
Senior Melissa Corraro led the Gaels with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.
The Gaels will get back to the basics, according to Piccirillo, and prepare for the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament, which begins Thursday.
