On Friday, Gillen, who is headed to the University of Virginia in the fall, earned his 201st career victory to become the winningest wrestler in state history. He broke the previous mark set by Ledyard's T.J. Hepburn from 2004-07.

A four-time All-American and four-time Academic All-American, Gillen tacked on three more match wins to reach the national finals.

On Saturday, Gillen defeated Kansas' Blake Bean of Kansas by fall in 2:41, then bested Virginia's Darren Hankins 15-7 to reach the final. Gillen actually trailed in that match 4-3 after the first period.

According to Connecticut Wrestling Online, only two other state wrestlers advanced to the senior national finals – Windham High’s James Poulin at 275 pounds in 1991 and Hand’s Jim Guzzio at 130 in 1992. Both finished second.
