Ben Malay scored 21 points -- all on 3-pointers - as the boys basketball team defeated Lyman Hall 53-37 on Tuesday.

Christian Pierre added 13 points for the Gaels, who climbed within a game of .500 at 3-4.

Jack McCarthy led Lyman Hall (2-4) with 14 points.

The Gaels pulled away from a close game by outscoring Lyman Hall 17-4 in the fourth quarter. Shelton was nursing a 36-33 lead entering the final period.

Nicole Beard paced three players in double figures with 19 points as the Shelton girls basketball team posted a 64-46 victory over winless North Haven.

Kelsey Pendagrast added 16 points and chipped in with 11 for the Gaelettes, who improved to 4-4.

North Haven dropped to 0-8. Shelton built a 31-18 halftime lead and coasted from there.

The Shelton boys swimming team dropped a close 88-82 decision to Xavier, one of the top-10 teams in the state, on Tuesday at the Shelton Community Center.

Shelton's Timothy Maloney had first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (54.92) and 100-yard backstroke (1:02.52) while the Gaels' Matthew Hellauer also won a pair of events, taking the 50-yard freestyle (23.34) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.43).

Shelton had second-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.27), 200-yard freestyle (Ryan Berman, 2:11.07),  200-yard IM (Kyle Barber, 2:20.74), 100-yard butterfly (Nicolas Shigo, 1:10.38), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:50.23) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:57.41).

The meet came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle, which Xavier won to grab the six-point victory.
