The Shelton boys basketball team suffered a heartreaking loss on Friday.

Michael Vessicchio, who scored 20 points, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give East Haven a 61-58 victory over the Gaels.

East Haven impoved to 4-4 while Shelton dropped to 3-5.

David Moreland scored 20 points and Christian Pierre added 19 for the Gaels, who squandered a 32-27 halftime lead.

Shelton also made just 11 of its 23 free throw attempts, although East Haven was only 6-of-15 from the line.

The Shelton girls basketball team climbed over .500 with a 50-41 victory against Amity on Friday.

Kelsey Pendagast scored 19 points for the Gaelettes, who improved to 5-4 as the midpoint of the season nears.

Lauren McCone added 10 points and Alyssa Eannotti chipped in with eight for Shelton, which pulled away from a 32-32 deadlock after three quarters for the time.

The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter and 22-22 at the half.

Chloe Brinton scored 12 points and Mikaila Schmitt 10 for the Spartans, who slipped to 5-3.
