Shelton National missed a chance to clinch a spot in the section one finals on Sunday night followed a 12-6 loss to East Haven in Orange.

And it may prove to be a costly defeat for Shelton National, which may have to beat undefeated Fairfield American (3-0) in its final pool game on Monday (5:30 p.m.) to advance to Wednesday's finale.

If Shelton National beats Fairfield American and East Haven handles North Stamford in the pool finales on Monday, the teams will finish in a three-way tie at 3-1.

However, they will have gone 1-1 against each other, so the two spots in Wednesday's final would be determined by a runs allowed per inning formula.

After Sunday, here is where the teams stand: Fairfield American, 1.063; Shelton National, 1.125, and East Haven, 0.889. In this scenario, it likely will come to the margin of victory in Monday's game.

However, if Shelton National losses, it would be eliminated if East Haven beats North Stamford to improve to 3-1.

In this scenario, Shelton National would have to hope for North Stamford to beat East Haven, which would create a three-way at 2-2.

It would then come down to the run differential between those three teams for the second spot in Wednesday's final. North Stamford's run allowed per inning mark is 1.688.
