The Shelton football team's hopes of making the Class LL state playoffs improved over the weekend.

Heading into week 10, the Gaels (7-2) are tied with Ridgefield and Pomperaug for the eighth and final playoff spot with 930 points, meaning the race won't be decided until the Thanksgiving Day games.

The Gaels have a minimum 140 points available against four-win Derby while Ridgefield has 150 points on the line against five-win Danbury and Pomperaug can only snag a minimum of 120 against two-win Oxford.

If all three win - and they will be favorites - it will come down to the bonus points -- how opponents Shelton, Ridgefield and Pomperaug have beaten fare in their final games.

Ridgefield has 20 guaranteed bonus points (beaten both teams) for the following games:

Bridgeport Central vs. Harding
Fairfield Ludlowe vs. Fairfield Warde

The Tigers have a possible 30 additional bonus points for the following games (asterisk indicates the team Ridgefield defeated):

*McMahon (3-6) vs Norwalk (7-1)
Westhill (0-9) vs. *Stamford (6-2)
Trinity Catholic (3-6) vs *Wilton (5-4)

McMahon will be a decided underdog, but Stamford and Wilton will be favorites. Barring any upsets, Ridgefield projects to 1,120 points (assuming, of course, a win over Danbury)

Shelton has no guaranteed bonus points but a possible 90 points available from the following games:

*-Fairfield Prep (5-4) vs. West Haven (6-3)
*Guilford (4-5) vs. Hand (9-0)
*Amity (4-5) vs North Haven (8-1)
*Hamden (1-8) vs. Notre Dame-West Haven (7-2)
*Wilbur Cross (1-7) vs. Norwich Free Academy (6-2)
Hillhouse (6-3) vs. *Wilbur Cross (1-7)
*Cheshire (4-5) vs. Southington (5-3)
East Lyme (4-4) vs.*Sheehan (4-4)
*Sheehan (4-4) vs. Lyman Hall (3-6)

Assuming a win over Derby (4-5), Shelton gets to 1,070. To match Ridgefield's projected total of 1,120, Shelton needs to "win" five of the above nine games. However, the teams the Gaels need to win are underdogs in seven of them.

Pomperaug has 30 guaranteed points:

Notre Dame vs. Immaculate
Immaculate vs. Brookfield
Bethel and Brookfield

Assuming a win over Oxford, that gets the Panther 150 points for a total of 1,080.

Pomperaug also has 50 additional points available and would need to "win" four of the five games to match Ridgefield's projected total of 1120:

Masuk (9-0) vs. *Newtown (8-1)
New Milford (3-5) vs. *Stratford (2-6)
*New Fairfield (3-5) vs. Oxford (2-6)
New Milford (3-5) vs. *New Fairfield (3-5)
*Stratford (2-7) vs. Bunnell (7-2)

Pomperaug could get 30 points from one New Milford and two New Fairfield wins, but Newtown and Stratford are clear underdogs.

Note: New Fairfield-Oxford becomes guaranteed if Pomperaug beats Oxford.

It's close, but Ridgefield appears to be in a slightly better position with a more favorable schedule.

Of Shelton could benefit if one-loss teams ahead of the Gaels - Hall, Norwalk and Greenwich were to lose.

Greenwich (8-1) faces undefeated Staples (8-0) in the FCIAC championship game, which counts toward the state playoffs, and Hall (8-1) takes on 9-0 Conard, so another defeat for those teams is entirely possible.
