One of the state's most storied high school football rivalries will be renewed on Thanksgiving morning when Shelton and Derby clash for the 101st time at Derby's DeFilippo Field (10:30 a.m.)

Recently, the series has been onesided in Shelton's favor as the Gaels have won eight straight and 11 of the last 12 to take a 50-43-7 lead over the Red Raiders.

Last year, the teams met at Shelton's Finn Stadium in the historic 100th clash between the ancient Naugatuck Valley combantants. Frank Camerino and Ryan DeAngelis combined for 317 yards rushing to lead the Gaels to a 38-14 victory.

With Derby's move to the Naugatuck Valley League and the program falling on some rough times recently, they had been some rumors leading up to last year's contest that it would be the last meeting in the series. There also had been some talk that the NVL wanted Derby to play a 10-game conference slate, but fortunately those rumors did not come to fruition.

Derby, which has won two in a row, is hoping for its second straight .500 season, although the Red Raiders have not had a winning campaign since 1996. They haven't beaten the Gaels since 2002.

Shelton, which has won three straight since a 27-0 setback to top-ranked Xavier, is looking to put the finishing touches on an 8-2 season.

Shelton is still alive for a Class LL state playoff berth, but wins by Pomperaug on Tuesday and Glastonbury and Ridgefield on Wednesday have left the Gaels will virtually no chance as they have slipped to 11th in the rankings.

Senior quarterback Raymond Kreiger has been effective for the Red Raiders, throwing for 2,494 yards, a mark that leads the NVL and ranks fourth in the state.

Derby has shown an ability to score points, averaging 35 per game. The problem is, the Red Raiders surrender 33 per game.

Shelton has not been nearly as affective through the air, using three quarterbacks this season, but Camerino has stabilized the offense since taking over under center and needs just three yards to reach 1,000 for the season on the ground.

Connor O'Brien also is a running threat for the Gaels with 425 yards. Shelton averages more than 200 rushing yards per game, so this contest shapes up as a classic contrast in styles - the Red Raiders' passing attack against the Gaels' ground-and-pound approach.

Shelton-Derby is the state's third-oldest rivalry, trailing only Norwich Free Academy-New London (which is the oldest high school football rivalry in the United States dating to 1875) and Ansonia-Naugatuck.
