Shelton Scores and Standings, Nov 7

Shelton's bid to repeat as Southern Connecticut Conference girls soccer champions came up short Saturday.

After dominating the first half, Shelton gave up a goal to Nicole Stauffer 12 minutes into the second half. The Rams made it hold up to defeat the Gaelettes 1-0 in the title game at East Haven.

Cheshire improved to 13-4-2 while Shelton ( 14-2-3) lost for only the second time this season. 

Natalie Reynolds made nine saves for Cheshire, which won its fifth SCC title. Micaela Joyce stopped two shots for Shelton, which begins defense of its CIAC Class LL state title on Friday.

During the regular season, Shelton had  a tie and a win in two meetings with Cheshire.

The CIAC announcing Thursday it has postponed the start of its state tournaments to allow  extra time for conferences to complete their own playoff tournaments.

State tournaments in soccer, field hockey, volleyball and swimming, scheduled to start on Monday, now will be begin Thursday. Pairings will be announced Wednesday.

Volleyball and field hockey state championship games now will take place Nov.  18-19. Girls and boys soccer championship games will be played the following weekend.
