After barely holding off Guilford 17-12 last week, the Shelton football team has a daunting task awaiting as the Gaels host top-ranked Xavier on Friday at Finn Stadium (7 p.m.)

The Falcons (5-0), who blanked Fairfield Prep 35-0 last week, enter the contest with an 18-game winning streak. They are quick, athletic and boast a huge defensive line with three Division I prospects.

Xavier also has a small but explosive running back in 5-9, 175-pound Mike Mastroiani who also would be getting Division I looks if not for his size.

The Gaels (4-1) come into Friday's contest with a two-game winning streak since their only loss, a disappointing 28-0 home setback to Notre Dame of West Haven.

Shelton coach Jeff Roy made some changes after that game, moving Frank Camerino to tailback and replacing him with backup Ed Groth.

The changes seem to have worked as Camerino rushed for 105 yards, including a 60-yard TD run, in last week's win, which wasn't secured until the Gaels broke up a pass in the end zone on the final play of the game. Groth also added 60 yards rushing.

While Shelton will be  heavy underdog against the defending CIAC Class LL state champions, the Gaels likely need a win to stay alive in the state playoff race.

Shelton is one of 15 teams in Class LL either undefeated or with one loss. The Gaels are ranked 14th.
