The Shelton intermediate girls volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start, defeating Bethany Middle School (2-0), Amity Junior High (2-1) and Adams Middle School of Guilford (2-1).

In the match against Bethany, co-captains Nicole Belade and Brooke McCone played well defensively while Nicole Roberts and Mackenzie Curly excelled on offense.

Against Amity, the team was led by the serving skills of Nicole Belade, Nicole Roberts and Saara Vohra while Colleen Flood and Jillian Ortoli starred defensively.

Shelton defeated Adams Middle School after going into deuce play. Belade, McCone and Ally Packnick helped key the win with Flood and Roberts pacing the team in hitting.

Other members of the team include Julia Szczena, Emma Doherty, Sydney Larsen, Victoria Dempko, Rachel Krystopowicz, Amy Lynders, Jessica Orazetti and Nicole Ulysal. 

Shelton is back in action on Oct. 13 against Amity.

The Shelton football team will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing effort last week when the Gaels visit Hamden on Thursday (7 p.m.) in a Southern Connecticut Conference matchup.

After opening the season with a pair of come-from-behind wins on the road, Shelton was blanked by Notre Dame of West Haven 28-0 in its home opener last weekend.

Hamden has lost 15 straight games, dating to the 2009 season. The Green Dragons have started this year 0-3 after going 0-10 in 2010. However, Hamden appears to be much improved following a season-opening 46-18 loss at Cheshire

After falling to North Haven 28-25 in week two, the Green Dragons nearly pulled off a huge upset last week,  but came up just short in a 32-31 defeat to eighth-ranked West Haven.

Hamden had taken a 31-24 lead with just over four minutes remaining before West Haven rallied in the final minutes.

The Green Dragons have some offensive weapons as Tim Dube passed for 340 yards and Ervin Philips rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns last week.
