Shelton Sports Roundup: Feb. 20

Three Shelton High School wrestlers -- Mark Failla, Sean Kellet and Edward - have advanced to the state Open championships next weekend after finishing in the top six over the weekend at the Class L championship at Bristol Central.

Failla, the top seed in the 106-pound division, finished third after losing his semifinal match 7-5 to eventual champion Kareem Small of East Lyme.

In the 126-pound division, Kellet, the third seed, won the title, posting a 11-9 decision over fourth-seed Henry Wales of Fairfield Ludlowe in the finals.

At 132 pounds,  Hunt, also the No. 3 seed, finished fourth after defaulting his match in the consolation final. Hunt dropped a 9-3 decision to No. 2 Chris Catanzaro of RHAM in the semifinals.

The state Open competition is set for Friday and Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

The Shelton boys basketball team needs to win Monday's regular-season finale against West Haven (7 p.m.) to make the sate tournament.

The Gaels dropped to 7-12 following Friday's 50-42 loss at Branford, their second straight defeat.

Christian Pierre scored 23 points and David Moreland added 15 for Shelton, which, jumped out to a 12-8 lead after the first quarter.

However, Branford (16-4) outscored Shelton 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 24-18 halftime lead.  The Gaels pulled within 38-33 after three periods.

West Haven.enters Monday's contest at 6-13, so the Gaels should have a chance for a victory, although the Blue Devils have won two straight, including Friday's 49-45 victory over Hand.
