Sean Kellet finished third in the 126-pound weight class Saturday at the state Open wrestling championships and qualified for next weekend's New England championship in Providence.
After earning a first-round bye, Kellet opened with a 10-5 decision over Tyler Bishop, then edged Howard Kilpatrick of Bacon Academy 7-6 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Kellet was pinned by Geovanni Medina of New Britain, but he came back to defeat Foran's Carl Luth 4-2 in the third-place match.
The top four finishers in each weight class earned the right to compete in the New England championships.

In the 106-pound class, Shelton's Mark Failla decisioned Thomas Wynosky of Montville 5-1 to finish fifth.

The Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team may be getting hot heading into postseason play.
The Wreckers closed out their regular season on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Cheshire at the Milford Ice Pavilion and will take a three-game winning streak into the Division II state tournament, which begins March. 5.
Staples (9-11) started 6-1, but then suffered a 10-game losing streak as the team was decimated by injuries, but the Wreckers have gotten some of their injured players back.
