The New Canaan boys hockey team broke out of its mini-slump in a big way Wednesday.

Tyler Manchuck and Jack Stanton each scored hat trick as the Rams routed Staples-Weston-Shelton 8-2 at the Darien Ice Rink.

New Canaan, which snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 9-6. The Rams are tied with Trinity Catholic and Westhill for fifth place in the FCIAC standings.

Under the new postseason format adopted by the league,the top-six teams qualify for the tier one playoffs.

Jake Granito and Zeph West also scored for New Canaan, which led 7-2 after the second period.

The injured-riddled Wreckers, who have been dressing just 10 skaters, suffered their seventh straight loss and dropped to 6-8.

The Shelton Recreation Department announces that youth tennis lessons start March 9 and will continue every Friday for four weeks. Ages 5-8 at 6:00-6:45 p.m., ages 9-10 at 7:00-7:45 p.m. The cost is $60.

Adult Open Gym for Basketball program will be held on Sunday mornings at the Shelton High School Gym through April 1,, 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. The Cost is $20. Participants must be a minimum of 18 years of age and be a Shelton resident, or a full time worker in Shelton to qualify to play. Participants must register at the Shelton Parks and Recreation Department in the Community Center, 41 Church Street and be issued a photo ID card. Participants must show their membership ID at the gym each week. This is an adult program and players are asked not to bring children due to lack of insurance for non-participants. Players are also asked not to bring basketballs to the gym. Basketballs will be provided.

The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department has a limited number of openings in their Adult Softball Leagues for the 2012 season. Divisions of play include Men’s Open A and B, Over 35 wooden bat, Coed, and Women’s. The league entry fee is approximately $400.
