The Shelton High School boys swimming and diving team finished 13th out of 22 teams at Wednesday's Class L championship at Wesleyan University and broke several school records.
The medley relay team, featuring senior co-captain Matt Hellauer, junior Tim Maloney, junior Cole Chavez and junior Ed Groth, got the meet started off right by crushing Shelton's three-year-old school record with a time of 1:49.47.
In the 200 freestyle, Hellauer placed second, breaking his own school record with a time of 1:45.80. During this race, he posted a 50.33 split after his first 100, which eclipsed another one of his school marks.
Tim Maloney placed 19th and attained a personal best in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.13. Sophomore Kyle Barber also achieved his personal best in the IM with a time of 2:13.92, which was 22nd.
Cole Chavez attained his personal best in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.29. Hellauer placed seventh in the 500 freestyle, backed up by Barber, who was 22nd and attained his best time of 5:21.12.

The next event in the Connecticut Challenge Speaker Series features a talk by Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor, mountain climber, and author of Keep Climbing: How I Beat Cancer and Reached the Top of the World.
Swarner shares his inspirational life story Thursday, April 12 at Roger Ludlowe Middle School at 7:30 PM. The event is free to the public and made possible in part with support from People’s United Bank. Registration is required at www.CTChallenge.org/keepclimbing.
Swarner, who was named the 2007 Jimmy V Foundation’s Don’t Ever Give Up Award winner for his courage, will take you on his life’s journey through a dynamic audiovisual presentation, that is not only inspiring, but offers a message of hope that taps into that motivational adrenaline rush that runs through all of us. The presentation will include his climb up the 29,035-foot giant that is Mount Everest, surviving hurricane-force winds and crossing crevasses thousands of feet deep on rickety aluminum ladders. Swarner will offer insight into the grueling journey of his youth and his fight for survival in overcoming two bouts with cancer. Finally, you will trek with Sean to the highest peaks in Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
Prior to the event, a special reception and flag signing for cancer survivors will be held at 6:30 pm. Swarner will carry the flag up Mt. Kilimanjaro this July and plant it at the summit. Following the event, Swarner will sign copies of his book, Keep Climbing. A limited quantity will be available for purchase or you may bring your own copy for him to sign.
Additional support for this program provided by BMW of Bridgeport and Aetna.
