Sean Kellett will compete this weekend in the New England wrestling championships in Providence.

Kellett finished third last week in the 126-pound weight class in the state Open champions, defeating Foran's Carl Luth 4-2 in the third-place match.

Since the top four in each weight class advanced, Luth also will be competing in Providence.

Kellet will take on Trevor Smith of Marshwood (Maine) in his first-round match

After clinching its first Class LL state tournament berth in five years with a 44-41 win over West Haven on the final day of the regular season, the reward for the boys basketball team is a first-round contest at top-ranked St. Joseph on Tuesday.

Shelton (8-12), which doubled its win total from last season, is the 32nd and last seed in the tournament while St. Joseph completed only the second undefeated regular season in school history (20-0).

The Cadets were, however, shocked by No. 8 seed Bridgeport Central 62-58 in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs.

A year ago, St. Joseph also lost to the No. 8 seed in the FCIAC playoffs, but went on to win their first state championship since 2001 and 10th in school history.

Should Shelton somehow pull off the upset, it would face either No. 16 Cheshire or No. 17 Stamford in the second round on Thursday. Last season, the Gaels finished just 4-16.
