Shelton High School diver Joseph Stein placed first at the Class L state championship meet held Thursday at Hamden High School. 

A junior, Stein broke his own school 11-dive record with a score of 422 points, becoming the first male diver in school history to achieve this distinction.

Stein, who will next compete at the state Open diving tournament next Thursday, will be honored at the Connecticut All-State banquet later this month.

The Shelton boys swim team will be competing in the Class L championship trials on Saturday.

The boys basketball team suffered a 59-38 loss to top seed St. Joseph on Tuesday in the first round of the Class LL state tournament.

The Gaels, who finished the season at 8-13, qualified for the state tournament for the first time in five years after finishing 4-16 last season.

St. Joseph improved to 21-1 and will host Cheshire in the second round on Thursday. Cheshire advanced with a 72-52 victory over Stamford.

Also on Tuesday, the Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team suffered a 4-3 loss to No. 7 seed in the first round of the Division II state tournament.

The Wreckers, who endured a 10-game losing streak after a 6-1 start due to a plethora of injuries, finished the season at 9-12.
