Shelton Students Win Awards for Fire Prevention Posters and Essays

The poster contest began in 1984 and was created to develop fire safety awareness for children and families. Winners will be awarded Jan. 12

The City of Shelton Fire Prevention Bureau is holding the annual Shelton Fire Prevention Contest Awards Presentation on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016 at 7 p.m. at Shelton Intermediate School, 675 Constitution Boulevard North.

The annual poster contest began in 1984 and was created to develop fire safety awareness for children and families. The contest is jointly sponsored by Connecticut FAIR Plan, the Connecticut Fire Marshals’ Association, Connecticut Board of Education and the Office of State Fire Marshal.

The 6th Grade Essay/PSA contest began in 1996 with the purpose of promoting fire safety. Judging of boht the essay and poster contests was held December 16, 2015 in conjunction with the Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest for 4th and 5th grade students.

Mayor Lauretti will present cash awards and certificates to winners of the Sixth Grade Essay/Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest. Classrooms, and each student author, will receive a cash award of $100, $75, and $50 for first, second, and third place, respectively.

Approximately 900 posters were submitted this year from Booth Hill, Elizabeth Shelton, Long Hill, Mohegan, Perry Hill, St. Joseph, St. Lawrence and Sunnyside schools. Each student who submitted a poster will receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a pen from the Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Committee.

All first place posters will be displayed over the next year at schools, public buildings, and events.

At the Awards Ceremony, first and second place winners will be announced for each school and grade. In addition the first place, overall city winners for 4th and 5th grade will be announced. Overall City of Shelton Winners are as follows:

  • 4th Grade - Griffin Marcinczyk of Elizabeth Shelton School
  • 5th Grade - Selin Ho of Perry Hill School
