SHS Girls’ Tennis Looks to Build Off Success

The Shelton High girls tennis team turned heads last year and looks to lay the foundation for future success this spring.

A swath of six seniors led the Gaelettes to an impressive 9-8 regular season record in 2010, earning second place in the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) Housatonic Division behind North Haven High. The strong showing qualified the team for its first SCC Tournament and for individual and team entries into the state tournament, where Shelton bested New Britain 6-1 in the opening round.

“Last season was a rewarding season,” said coach Michelle Sedlock. “It was great to be in the race for the division championship for the first time.”

With the loss of last year's seniors, the Gaelettes will rely on senior captains Laurie Anne Boisvert and Brianna Kraynak for guidance and stability. The No. 2 and No. 3 single competitors figure to play a large role in Shelton's goal of returning to the state tournament.

“They both show wonderful dedication and leadership qualities,” Sedlock said.

Shelton has strength in its No. 1 singles position with the return of junior Domonique Gumbs, who earned an All-SCC award last season.

Sedlock said the team is still working out its top doubles team, but it will most likely include junior Dana Cho, who won an All-SCC award last season as a doubles player.

With a veteran core of returning singles players and Cho bringing strength to the top doubles duo, Sedlock said her team is aiming for the state tournament and another winning record.

“Our goals are to qualify for state team and individual tournaments again and have a .500 record or higher,” she said. “Our strengths are focus dedication and unity. We plan to have fun and represent Shelton High School the best we can.”
