SHELTON, CT — Subway is working to move its Milford headquarters to nearby Shelton, according to Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti.

Lauretti told Hearst Connecticut Media that a lease hasn't been signed yet, but he does know where the company intends to settle.

Subway announced last week that it was looking to move its headquarters to northeastern Fairfield County. The company would be returning to its Fairfield County roots if that happens.

Subway started with a Bridgeport location in 1965 and expanded to 16 locations by 1974, according to the company's website. Founders Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck then began a franchising operation that culminated in it becoming one of the world's largest chains.

The company announced it would move some of its consumer-facing business units to Miami last year. It also recently announced plans to hire 50,000 new restaurant team members nationwide in June.
