The town of Norwalk is famous for its Annual Oyster Festival which is held in September. This festival is based apon the town's orgins which dates back to the 19th century. It is then when the town's people farmed for oysters on the shoreline using what was the largest fleet of Steamed Powered Oyster Boats in the world at the time. Those days have passed and much has changed, but the history remain...s in the festival. Not only is there history here, but a lot to do with over 24 neighborhoods. As a matter of fact Norwalk has more attractions and activities to do then any town along our great shoreline. The Norwalk Maritime Aqaurium, a huge tourist attraction is located in the Sono section of town. You have the Sheffield Lighthouse which can be toured by boat. The anchor store for Stew Leonards resides here, with many other restaurants, shops and stores along it's Route 1. We have the historic Silvermine Tavern near Route 15 and the Lockwood Matthews Mansion located right next to I-95. All this at the southern terminous of Super 7, the highway. Speaking of highways, have you ever wondered where the name for the Yankee Doodle Bridge came from? This name dates back to the 18th century during a time of war. A British Surgeon made fun of a militia from Norwalk for having feathers as part of their uniforms. Hence, the stuck a feather in his hat and called in macaroni portion of the song. Norwalk does have it's stories , its history and the oysters though nobody ever talks about its calfs. Let me explain. In the eastern part of town, on the shoreline lays Calf Pasture Beach. During the 17th century, the town's people used this area for grazing their cows. That was a long time ago and the beach is now a paradise. Myself, I had a great experience this past summer on my 1st ever trip to this beach. The beach is located on a peninsula, that is very flat with lots to do. There are boce courts, baseball diamonds, skateboarding and beach volleyball. There is a boardwalk, shadded by some trees if you prefer not to get some sun. The sand on the beach is well groomed and as you look out into Lond Island Sound you can spot a few Islands that make you feel like you are in the caribbean. There is cafe beachside, with coffees, drinks and sandwiches. There are also locker rooms for changing and on the walls you have pictures of the beach from days gone bye. Lets not forget that the towns Annual 4th of July Fireworks are held here and in the summer, kart racing. To top it off, one of the races from the town's summers series of road races is held here. I did the race, as it starts at the beach and ends there. When it was over, I really didn't want to leave. At one time, Norwalk may have been the butt of jokes. The town has had the last laugh and I can guarantee you that there is a lot of laughing and good times at Calf Pasture Beach. Norwalk, thats where all the good times are!!!
