SIMSBURY, CT — Simsbury voters will head to the polls Saturday, May 16, to decide the town’s proposed $130.7 million town/school operating and capital budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The annual budget referendum will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Main Meeting Room at Simsbury Town Hall, 933 Hopmeadow St.
Voters will consider four separate budget questions approved by the Simsbury Board of Finance and the Simsbury Board of Selectmen on April 29 and April 30.
The largest proposal is the board of education and non-public schools budget, totaling $91.54 million, a 3.06 percent increase from the current year.
The town operating budget totals $30.12 million, representing a 1.68 percent increase.
Additional referendum questions cover special revenue funds, including sewer, residential property, and parks and recreation accounts totaling $9.37 million, as well as $17.98 million for capital, capital nonrecurring, and debt service expenses.
The proposed overall budget package totals $130.73 million, an increase of approximately $2.73 million, or 2.13 percent, over the current fiscal year.
Town officials estimate the proposal would increase the mill rate from 33.02 to 33.78.
Based on the town’s median home value, annual property taxes would rise from about $10,401 to $10,641 — an increase of roughly $239, or 2.3 percent.
Officials noted the proposed mill rate remains an estimate until finalized by the finance board after the referendum and does not include fire district taxes.
Under the referendum rules, a “yes” vote approves an appropriation, while a “no” vote rejects it.
Absentee ballots will be available through May 15 at the Simsbury Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours.
Eligible voters include registered Simsbury electors and certain property owners liable for at least $1,000 in taxes on the town’s Oct. 1, 2025, grand list, in accordance with Connecticut law.
