Nancy Palker relives the days of unrest on the Dakota reservation punctuated by kidnapping, death threats, and shootouts between the FBI and members of the American Indian Movement. Meet unforgettable characters--the patient who jumps out of a hospital window; the man who drives cars without motors; the pilot who lands a plane at night without lights; the nurse who jiggles an electrical plug to power the hospital. Find out what happens when the budget and supplies run out in the Indian Health Services Hospital. Witness miracles of survival as well as poignant tragedies. Nancy Palker has retired from nursing and lives in Maryland with her husband and nearby family. Her career spanned more than forty-five years in health care as an aide, registered nurse and nurse practitioner in gerontology, working with several ethnic groups. She organized nursing groups and successfully lobbied for changes in health care legislation and regulation in several states. She has presented her research at national and local events, has taught health topics to professional and senior groups, and has accompanied a musical group of 200 teenagers through Europe as their nurse. She continues to advocate for improvements in Rosebud’s health care system.

The Storyteller’s Cottage is located in a vintage Victorian house in the center of historic Simsbury, CT, and hosts all manner of immersive literary events throughout the year, including Agatha Christie inspired live murder mystery parties, Great Gatsby themed Jazz Supper Clubs, fascinating close-up illusions at Fine Parlor Magic nights, a Literary Dinner Party series on select evenings at midnight, and more.
