Fungi of Forests and Landscapes&nbsp;
Most people can recognize a mushroom when they see one, but have you ever wondered how that mushroom got there, or what it’s doing there? Ever wondered about that yellow blob that seems to appear spontaneously in your mulch?&nbsp; Did you know that many plants, including the trees in our forests, could not survive without the important associations their roots establish with fungi?&nbsp;This talk will introduce the audience to the fascinating world of the poorly understood Kingdom Fungi, and discuss the important role of fungi in our forests.&nbsp;
Bob Marra earned his PhD in plant pathology and mycology from Cornell University. After postdoctoral positions at the University of Arizona and Duke University, Bob joined the Department of Plant Pathology &amp; Ecology at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station as a Forest Pathologist.&nbsp; Bob’s research encompasses various aspects of tree and plant diseases of natural and urban ecosystems. Bob began working on beech leaf disease in 2019, the first year that BLD was observed in Connecticut. His current research uses DNA fingerprinting to study the population dynamics of the BLD nematode. With a generous grant from the International Programs Division of the US Forest Service, Bob spent two months in Japan in autumn of 2024 to begin his research into the pathosystem as it manifests on&nbsp;Fagus crenata&nbsp;in Japan. Bob continues his collaboration with the USFS in maintaining eleven long-term BLD monitoring plots throughout CT.

Ava will teach you some basic and intermediate Cricut functions and you will walk away from class with a mug or coaster! You will create one or more designs in the software, then learn how to use the Cricut Maker and tools.
Please bring your favorite notebook to take notes&nbsp;or we will have paper and pens for you to use to have a reference to remember your skills!
Space is limited for this class and is for Adults &amp; Teens ages 13+. Please do not attend if you are not registered.
Anyone taking the class will need to&nbsp;fill out an&nbsp;Innovators’ Workshop Liability Waiver and Hold Harmless Agreement.&nbsp; You can fill out the forms before training by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.simsburylibrary.info/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/IW-Liability-Waiver-and-Hold-Harmless-Agreement-2021.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">downloading here</a>,&nbsp;or arrive early to fill out the paperwork at the start of training in the makerspace.

S.P.A.R.K.&nbsp;stands for&nbsp;Science. Play. Action. Research. Knowledge,&nbsp;and that’s exactly what the morning is all about. Students will dive into interactive labs, ask big questions, and explore how science connects to the world around them.
Throughout the morning, students will rotate through all three engaging sessions:
Snack Science: Cracking the Code of Carbs, Fats &amp; Proteins
Students will test everyday foods to uncover the building blocks of life - carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
From Cabbage to Chemistry: A Color-Changing Exploration of pH
Using red cabbage as a natural indicator, students will experiment with acids and bases and watch chemistry come alive in vibrant color.
Air Apparent: The Invisible Force All Around Us
Through hands-on experiments, students will explore the properties of air—and discover just how powerful something invisible can be.
