Four-Town Juneteenth Celebration Saturday Moved Indoors: Update
The event will take place in Simsbury, with Simsbury, Avon, Canton and Farmington all planning the celebration.

SIMSBURY/AVON/CANTON/FARMINGTON, CT — Four local communities are uniting for a special celebration Saturday that defines the concept of unity, with organizers announcing Friday that a rainy weather forecast will move the event indoors.
Simsbury, Avon, Canton and Farmington are hosting their annual "Juneteenth Celebration" on Saturday, June 17, inside Simsbury High School, 34 Farms Village Road, Simsbury.
It was originally planned for the Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center, but a rainy forecast prompted organizers to move the location.

The event is from noon to 4 p.m. (gates open at 11 a.m.) with free admission/parking.
Folks will be able to enjoy several performances from musicians like Nekita Walker, the Daman Curtis Afro Cuban Jazz Project, Magic Soul Academy and FriendZWorld Music.

The nation's newest federal holiday, Juneteenth has been a special day for many generations, commemorating the day on June 19, 1865, after the end of the Civil War, when union troops arrived in Texas and announced the end of slavery to enslaved Blacks there.
President Joe Biden signed the legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021.
