Poet Mahogany Browne to Give Westminster School Reading April 29

Poet, writer, curator and organizer Mahogany Browne will give a reading at Westminster School April 29 as part of the school’s Friday Nights at Westminster series of readings and concerts held during the academic year. The student readers will be sophomore Carolyn Cheng and junior Tomasina Pearman.

Browne is the executive director of JustMedia, a media literacy initiative designed to support the groundwork of criminal justice leaders and community members.

She is the author of recent works: “Chlorine Sky,” “Woke: A Young Poets Call to Justice,” “Woke Baby” and “Black Girl Magic.” She is also the founder of the diverse literature initiative Woke Baby Book Fair and is excited about her latest poetry collection. “I Remember Death by Its Proximity to What I Love” is a book-length poem responding to the impact of mass incarceration on women and children. Based in Brooklyn, she has served as the first-ever poet-in-residence at the Lincoln Center.

Browne’s reading will take place from 7-8 p.m. in the school’s Werner Centennial Center. It is free and open to vaccinated members of the public with advance registration by emailing mcervas@westminster-school.org with the number of people attending. Reservations may be made until the day before the event, and space may be limited.

Westminster School is located at 995 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Ample parking will be available in the parking lot adjacent to Armour Academic Center.
