Simsbury High Students Honored By VFW For Their Take On Democracy

A SHS senior and a sophomore were honred by the Simsbury VFW chapter for their work in the 'Voice of Democracy' essay contest.

SIMSBURY, CT — Two local high school students were recently honored by Simsbury VFW members for their essays on democracy.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Metacomet Post 1926, Simsbury, recently awarded prizes to two Simsbury High School students for their essays in the Voice of Democracy contest.

SHS Senior Sofia Scholtz won first place, while Kenzy Blume, sophomore, won second place.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Why is the Veteran Important?”

Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest has been the VFW’s premier scholarship program since 1961.

It is open to high school students and has a monetary award at the post, district and state levels.

State winners move on to a national competition with up to $30,000 in scholarship money awarded.
