Simsbury Opens Cooling Center, Urges Caution, as Heat and Humidity Grip Region

Simsbury residents can find relief from extreme heat at a designated cooling center and two local pools.

SIMSBURY, CT — Town officials are urging residents to take precautions during a heat wave expected to bring temperatures above 90 degrees and high humidity to Simsbury through Sunday evening.

In a June 11 announcement, the Town of Simsbury and the Simsbury Department of Community and Social Services advised residents to stay indoors when possible, use fans and air conditioning, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Officials recommended keeping shades and curtains closed to help maintain cooler indoor temperatures. Residents who must spend time outdoors are encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Gov. Ned Lamont has activated Connecticut's Extreme Hot Weather Protocol through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Cooling centers are available statewide, and residents can find the nearest location by calling 2-1-1 or visiting 211ct.org.

In Simsbury, residents seeking relief from the heat can use the Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St., during regular operating hours.

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The town also highlighted several outdoor locations that may offer cooler conditions, including pavilion areas at Town Forest Park, Tariffville Park and Hop Brook Landing, as well as wooded trails in Ethel Walker Woods and state parks located in town.

Simsbury Farms Pool, 100 Old Farms Road, and Memorial Pool, 22 Plank Hill Road, are also open.

Officials encouraged residents to check on elderly family members and neighbors during the heat wave and reminded the public never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Residents concerned about themselves or others who may be vulnerable to extreme heat can contact the Simsbury Community and Social Services Department at 860-658-3283. For emergencies, residents should call 911.
