Simsbury Senior Housing Complexes Get Major Funding Boost

SIMSBURY, CT — The town's housing authority is receiving a major boost from the federal government that will help it renovate two senior housing complexes under its direction.

Thursday, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and other state and local dignitaries were at Simsbury Town Hall to announce $640,000 in federal funding that, ultimately, will help local seniors stay in Simsbury as they age.

The award to the Simsbury Housing Authority will help the group rehabilitate two of its properties — the Dr. Owen L. Murphy Apartments and the Virginia Connolly Residence.

Also on hand Thursday were Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis and state Rep. Melissa Osborne, D-Simsbury.

Located at 1600 Hopmeadow St., the Dr. Owen L. Murphy Apartments are for "unassisted, independent living for people 62 and over" or those living on Social Security disability benefits.

Those living there receive rent subsidies based on their income.

The Virginia Connolly Residence is a congregate housing community for those with limited incomes aged 62 and over.

It is also located at 1600 Hopmeadow St. and it offers congregate housing (some services like one meal a day/weekly light housekeeping and other amenities) as well as assisted living services.

The funding award was announced at a special event Thursday at Eno Memorial Hall outside.
