Rep. Hampton Tackling Key Issues During 2015 Legislative Session
Introduces 21 Bills Addressing Children, Elderly, Veterans

Simsbury’s State Representative John K. Hampton has introduced 21 bills during the 2015 legislative session covering a broad range of important issues. Proposed bills are now making their way through the committee process.

“I am honored and privileged to represent Simsbury in the state legislature. I’ve listened to my constituents and have drafted meaningful legislation to meet their needs,” said Rep. Hampton. “In my role as Assistant Majority Leader, I look forward to shepherding these bills to passage.”

Many of Hampton’s initiatives are aimed at helping children –creating a pilot program for autism spectrum individuals, banning pesticides on school grounds, enhancing suicide prevention programs and expanding the administration of Epinephrine to schools buses.

“As Vice Chairman of the Committee on Children, the health, well-being and safety of our children is a top priority of mine,” said Rep. Hampton.

Long an advocate on aging issues, Hampton has introduced legislation strengthening background checks for home health care providers and calling for better oversight of conservators.

“As our elderly population dramatically increases, I am working hard to protect our senior citizens and help them thrive, providing them access to the best in healthcare, housing and transportation,” said Hampton.

Rep. Hampton-- a member of the Aging Committee--is a major proponent of the CARE Act, a measure that would ensure that family caregivers are recognized in a hospital, know when their loved one will be discharged, and better understand the tasks expected of them when their loved one returns.

Mr. Hampton is also championing legislatively an increase to the exemption from state income tax on military retirement pay from fifty per cent to one hundred per cent.

“We owe all of our veterans an enormous debt of gratitude. This exemption will pay tribute to these brave men and women and while offering them meaningful financial relief upon their well-earned retirement,” said Hampton.

Of course, most attention is on the state budget and the difficult economy that is facing Connecticut.

Rep. Hampton has introduced legislation placing a two-year moratorium on any new bonding authorizations or allocations except for purposes related to improving the state’s infrastructure and supporting health care, military, public safety, education and economic revitalization.

“I continue to promote fiscal responsibility and restraint at the State Capitol. A sound budget can be crafted that still protects core programs and services while decreasing spending. I believe that my bill –if passed--would go a long ways towards cost savings while shoring up our roads, highways, bridges and railways,” added Hampton.
