Watch Out For 2024's 'Water Wars': Simsbury PD

The Simsbury Police Department is warning the community about the 2024 'Water Wars,' an unsanctioned event by Simsbury HS seniors.

SIMSBURY, CT — Local police are warning the community of an annual graduation "tradition" where soon-to-be high school graduates open fire on each other with water guns.

Called "Water Wars," the annual rite starts Monday, April 22, and Simsbury police said it will last for about two weeks.

They're urging high school seniors to be safe and for the public to be aware of what is going on should they see teens firing what appears to be "guns" at each other.

"It is important to note that while this event is organized by high school seniors, 'Water Wars' is not endorsed by Simsbury Public Schools, and the police department does not support or condone this activity," wrote the SPD Sunday.

Police said 'Water Wars' is a game where seniors are assigned water gun attack "targets" and, when shot, they are eliminated.

According to the SPD, this involves targeting fellow seniors at homes, vehicles, and social events.

Generally, police said, the "guns" are brightly colored, toy water guns.

But, according to the SPD, there are times when teens use "poor judgment" and use water guns that look like real firearms.

This, police said, causes issues for law enforcers and community members, who may be led to believe a real crime is happening.

As a result, the SPD is warning parents to discuss safety measures with their children if they're planning to engage in "Water Wars."

Those include: refraining from speeding and engaging in vehicle chases; not obstructing traffic or creating traffic hazards; refraining from wearing dark and/or camouflage clothing; using only clear, toy water guns (not accurate facsimiles); and not disrupting businesses and other residents.
