Bear Scared Off In Southbury

SOUTHBURY, CT — A bear looking for a snack in a garbage can was scared away by an alarm in Southbury Jan. 11.
The video as seen on the Neighbors app shows the bear make his or her way to the bin and take a sniff. An alarm then sounds and the bear quickly runs into the woods.
The loud sound plays around the 20 second mark.

Black bears have become a more common sight in Connecticut during recent years.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection recommends that residents remove birdfeeders and secure any potential food sources. Bears have no problem snacking on trash, barbeque grill leftovers, compost and pet food. They are often scared away by loud noises.

In most situations bears will wander back to more secluded areas and they can often be scared away by loud noises. Bears were spotted more than 8,000 times in 2018. Sightings can be reported to DEEP.
