Decision on Ethics Complaint Against Southbury Selectman Expected Monday

The vote was delayed at Thursday's hearing.

The decision on an anonymous ethics complaint against Selectman Jennifer O’Neill for serving on two boards simultaneously will be made on Monday, the Republican-American reports.

At Thursday’s hearing, the commission decided to delay the vote to give committee members time to review public testimony and a chance to look at Chairman Joseph Ruggiero’s proposal. According to the paper, Ruggiero proposed that O’Neill be found in violation of the ethics code but not be penalized as she had resigned from the Southbury Economic Development Commission.

O’Neill resigned from the EDC at last week’s Board of Selectmen meeting.

The Ethics Commission hired an attorney to advise commissioners about the complaint for which the town approved a $5,000 purchase order, the paper reports.

According to the paper, First Selectman Ed Edelson agrees with the complaint and believes the code is meant to address permanent boards. At the hearing, many came out in support of O’Neill.
