Pomperaug River Rocks! (Geology Talk & Tour)

A watershed is defined by its geology -- the lay of the land and pathway of a river is a reflection of the rocks and soils beneath the surface. In our midst are many rare geological characteristics like its basalt and sandstone formations; a textbook stratified drift aquifer system; and a clean, free-flowing river.

Over the last century, scientists have made many interesting findings in the Pomperaug Watershed. For instance, did you know that a 300 million year old piece of fossilized tree was recently discovered in South Britain and named for where it was found? Do you know how susceptible your drinking water is to contamination? Or that part of the aquifer is already contaminated?

Several scientists from USGS, Yale University, and Wesleyan University will give brief presentations at the Woodbury Town Office Annex that will be followed by a field trip. Stops will include the well fields in Woodbury's Middle Quarter. In Southbury and South Britain, stops will feature glacial boulders, sandstone formations, and fossilized wood. You'll also have an opportunity to get a first-hand look at bedrock well over 100 feet underground as the USGS sends a camera down one of its bore-holes.

Refreshments available in the morning; BYO Lunch.
