Identity Theft Attempt Reported In Southbury, Man Arrested: Police

Police said the suspect also had an active warrant and was held on $125,000 bond.

SOUTHBURY, CT — A man was taken into custody Saturday after police said he attempted to commit identity theft at a bank in Southbury.

Officers were called to Newtown Savings Bank, 685 Main St. South, around 11:35 a.m. on April 4 for a report of a person attempting fraud, according to the Southbury Police Department.

Following an investigation, police arrested Malik Bennett, 25, of the Bronx, New York.

He was charged with criminal impersonation, first-degree forgery, attempted second-degree larceny, first-degree identity theft and third-degree forgery, police said.

Authorities also said Bennett had an active warrant for failure to appear in the first degree.

He was held on a total of $125,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on April 6 at 9 a.m., according to police.
