Obituary: Derward Eugene “Gene” Gilmore, 87, of Southbury

Derward Eugene “Gene” Gilmore died peacefully on June 24, 2016, at his home in Southbury CT. Born on May 29, 1929, in Texas, Gene grew up in Hobbs, New Mexico.
He served in the armed forces in Okinawa and later attended college on the GI Bill, achieving a Master of Science Biology from North Texas State College in 1951.

After some years of teaching high school in Port Arthur, Texas, he began working in the educational publishing industry, where he had a long successful career with McGraw-Hill Inc, heading the company’s International Publishing offices both in Panama and in Maidenhead, England.
He later retired from McGraw-Hill’s School Division in New York City as Editor in Chief of the Industrial Arts and Home Economics Department. Gene had lived in New York City for several years before moving to Connecticut, where he resided first in Stamford and later in Southbury.

He is survived by his two sisters Peggy Ferrell of Hobbs, NM, and Loula Killian of Albuquerque NM. Nephews, Michael Ferrell, Denton, Texas, David Ferrell, Hobbs, NM, Smokey Ferrell, Hobbs, NM, Ted Killian, Safford, AZ, Chris Killian, China Springs, Texas, Colin Killian, Collage Station, Texas, and niece, Stefanie, Albuquerque NM and 20 great grand nephews and nieces.
Gene asked only to have his ashes returned to his beloved New Mexico so he may rest in peace.
