PHS Phoenix: Mixed Feelings to New Lockers, but New Schedule a Success

Pomperaug High School's independent, student-run magazine came out with a new issue recently. We present some highlights.

New lockers were installed at PHS over the summer.  Though most students thought the change was necessary, they are also unhappy with the change in colors and organization that went with it.

A poll conducted by the Phoenix revealed about two-thirds of the students questioned thought the change was generally an improvement, but there were complaints from both sides.

According to the Phoenix, the most frequent gripe as that the new colors and names of locker bays were ugly and confusing.  Upperclassman especially said the new lockers are in inconvenient locations for their classes.  Another, less frequent complaint was that the school should have spent the money on other, more important renovations.

Principal Praises New Schedule

Principal Lorrie Rodrigue said that she was "pleasantly surprised" by the new schedule, which controversially shortened the lunch period and expanded time between classes to four minutes.  According to Rodrigue, no issues have arisen from the change.

She said her next priority for scheduling was expanding elective options.

Columnist Elizabeth Cohn reflects on a summer trip sixteen Pomperaug students took to Italy and France for twelve days.  The group's chaperone, Yolande Bosman commented on the unique experience.

"It is a very special moment in time when you can witness and offer the opportunity for those 'awesome' experiences… All of it is nothing short of a spiritual experience. After 30 years of travel with students, the different cultures and people never cease to inspire me," said Bosman.
