From Pomperaug High School: The Pomperaug High School (PHS) Debate Team concluded a successful season at the State Finals of the Connecticut Debate Association, held at Joel Barlow High School at the end of March.
The PHS Debate team participated in monthly tournaments from October through March and qualified to compete in the final championship debate. During the season, debaters earned 13 trophies for placing in the top 5 at a tournament. In addition, there were 8 teams who were undefeated and 20 finishes in “Top Ten.”
The Debate Team is an opportunity for students to improve public speaking, develop critical thinking skills, practice developing sound and logical arguments, hone research skills in preparation for debates, and understand multiple sides of important issues.

Students who finished in the top 10 at a tournament were: Michelle Lu, Nathan Gibson, Triloshan Thillaikumaran, Devon Zainc, Benjamin Ecsedy, Nathanial Crane, Will Rupff, Sarvika Thammana, Ania Misiorek, Thomas Drumm, Juliana Rodrigues, Max Bueno, Alison MacDougall, Sara Scribner, Zachary Wisnefsky, Winson Chen, and Hansuja Chaurasia.
Michelle Lu, Triloshan Thillaikumaran, Devon Zainc, Nathanial Crane, Will Rupff, Sarvik Thammana, Ania isiorek, and Alison MacDougall finished in the top 10 places in more than one tournament.

“Our amazing officers played a huge role in the success of the team by leading practices every
other Monday from September through March. I am extremely proud of all of our debaters for
representing PHS not only with their intellectual abilities, but also with strong character and
sportsmanship,” said Kelly Pelletier, PHS Media Specialist and Debate Team Advisor.
