Potential Heritage Tree May Need To Be Removed

Local officials are hoping the tree can be saved but approval has been given if it needs to be removed.

SOUTHBURY, CT — A potential Heritage Tree on Horse Fence Hill Road may need to be removed, town officials said.

Public Works Director John Cottell told the Board of Selectmen at a meeting earlier this month that a tree on Horse Fence Hill Road has been identified by Eversource for trimming and/or removal, according to meeting minutes.

They are hoping to just trim it but it may need to be taken down. The tree is extremely old and may possibly be a Heritage Tree, officials said. The town has an ordinance that prohibits the removal of Heritage Trees without approval of the Board of Selectmen.

Cottell has been unable to verify that this is the case, so to err on the side of caution he has brought it before the Board for their approval, according to meeting minutes. The selectmen voted to approve the request.
