Region 15 Schools Compete For Book Bowl Title

From Pomperaug Regional School District 15: The 5th Annual Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl competition was held at the Southbury Library on Monday, April 8, 2019.

Winning teams representing Region 15’s four elementary schools competed against each other to answer questions about the ten 2019 Intermediate Nutmeg Book Award nominees.

Marina Turk, Emilia Capellini, Patrick Labriola (team captain), Norah Mowrey, and Catherine Powers represented Gainfield Elementary School (GES) as members of the team “Book Loving Llamas” to win the 2019 Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl.

Competitions at the school level determined teams that would represent their school at the district-wide competition. In addition to the GES team, Mia Shaker, Camdyn Bringurst, Sofia Fidanza (team captain), Yara Abourjelili, and Gianna Purcaro represented “The 5 Booketeers” from Middlebury Elementary School; Grayson Mengold, Drew Fromowitz, Alex Erb (team captain), Sabella Glasgow, and Emily Daukas represented “The Book Guard” from Long Meadow Elementary School; and Valeria Ferrer, Jordyn Geanuracos, Alana Pierce (team captain), Joseph Ferreira, and Jackson Van Ness represented “Perfect Pickles” from Pomperaug Elementary School.

“The Book Bowl has become an annual event during which our readers develop many skills: teamwork, compromise, and collaboration, just to name a few! We're so proud of our students and appreciate the support of Region 15 staff members, the Southbury Public Library and families in making this year's Book Bowl our best yet!” said Christine Parker, Gainfield Elementary School Media Specialist.

This event is a collaboration among the four Region 15 elementary school library media specialists: Christina O’Neill (Long Meadow Elementary School), Stephanie Robinson (Middlebury Elementary School), Kristyn Mastropietro (Pomperaug Elementary School) and Christine Parker (Gainfield Elementary School); Southbury Public Library’s staff: Heather Aronson (Head of Youth Services/Assistant Director), Elizabeth Kelly (Teen/Reference Librarian), Katie Steele and Sarah Rogers (Library Assistants); Nutmeg Book Award Committee comprised of librarians, teachers and students; library paraprofessionals, Principals, Fifth Grade teachers and staff members, and families at each of Region 15’s elementary schools.

“The Nutmeg Book Bowl is the culmination of everyone working together. The teachers, librarians, and parents really encourage the kids to participate and to read, the students put in a lot of time reading and preparing, and everyone has lots of fun. The end result is an enjoyable event for the elementary student community,” Heather Aronson, Head of Youth Services, Southbury Public Library.
