Southbury Approves Affordable Housing Proposal: Report
After several rejections, this time the developer prevailed despite vocal resident opposition.

SOUTHBURY, CT — After several previous failures, Developer Kevin Bennett was able to get his apartment complex approved. Only when Bennett used the hammer of the state's affordable housing statute did the town approve his plans.
The Republican-American reports that Bennett received approval for a 14-unit complex at 390 Roxbury Road called The Meadows. Residents have opposed the project for 2 years. The units will be in a two-story building.
Because Bennett filed his most recent application under the state's affordable housing statute, the town was essentially powerless to deny the project. If Southbury rejected it, they'd go to court, almost assuredly lose and have to pay significant sums of money on legal fees. The affordable housing statute gives power to developers and puts the municipality on the defense.
