On Friday, the Southbury Department of Public Works re-opened the bridge over Transylvania Brook at Spruce Brook Road to through traffic.
This road has been closed since July 30th after an inspection by the Department of Transportation noted a significant change in the condition of the culverts that compromised the safety of the bridge.

Working with design engineers and CT DOT, the DPW installed a concrete slab spanning the brook culverts to make the road safe for traffic. After a week of cure time for the concrete, the asphalt riding surface was added and the guiderails were replaced and the road is deemed safe for traffic to resume daily use.
The safety team from CTDOT re-inspected the structure and agreed the bridge should be re-opened. Both the Department of Public Works and the CTDOT will continue to monitor the culvert.

The replacement of the culvert is still pending. A new design approach has been identified that promises to minimize the design and permitting time required for this project. Southbury continues to work closely with the CTDOT, the design engineers, and permitting agencies to advance this project.
“The Town of Southbury thanks the traveling public for their patience during the closing of this road over the past two weeks,” First Selectman Ed Edelson wrote on his Facebook page.
