Sustainable Southbury Receives Grant For Food Waste Initiatives

SOUTHBURY, CT — Sustainable Southbury, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, working to transform Southbury into a more sustainable community by driving local action.

The grassroots, all-volunteer organization has been awarded three grants, totaling $6,740 from the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, the Community Foundation and the Tribury Rotary. Chuck Litty, the founder of Sustainable Southbury and Anne Marie Hunter, Secretary of their Board, wrote the grant proposals.

The organization also conducted a fundraising campaign under the Sustainable CT Community Match Fund, which provides dollar-for-dollar matching up to a goal amount. Anne Marie Hunter, Chuck Litty, Dee Stradling, Fadwa Najamy, Helana Hoover-Litty, and Joyce Schroeder, and organized the campaign. They raised almost $7,000 from 83 individuals and businesses, exceeding their goal of $6,000 which will be matched.

This new funding will be used to educate local residents about reducing/eliminating food scraps in their garbage, to expand the food waste reduction program for food-based businesses in Southbury, and to start town-wide food scrap recycling pilots. Any food-based business that is interested in taking part in the food waste reduction program can contact Chuck Litty.

Sustainable Southbury is entirely run by volunteers and welcomes any

Southbury residents to participate. In addition to food waste reduction, there are many options for volunteering, covering recycling, waste reduction, energy conservation, clean energy and other aspects of sustainability.
