U.S. News Ranks Pomperaug Among Top Schools in Connecticut

Pomperaug a top tier program statewide, nationally recognized, according to U.S. News and World Report.

A recent study conducted by the U.S. News and World Report ranks Southbury’s Pomperaug High School as one of the top schools in the state, and a nationally recognized program.

According to the report, Pomperaug is the #14 ranked school in Connecticut and nationally ranked the #521 best school in the nation, a silver medal award-winning program.

The study compares high schools across the nation based on a number of variables, including proficiency test scores, college readiness and student-teacher ratio.

Pomperaug came in at 96 percent efficiency in Math and 98 percent efficiency in Reading, both above the state average. PHS also ranked above the state average in college readiness.

The student-teacher ratio at PHS was slightly above the state average at 14:1. According to the study the school has 1,418 students and 100 teachers.

Pomperaug High School Principal Lorrie Rodrigue considered the ranking a true honor and felt all staff, students and community members were to thank for the recognition.

"I am so proud of the diligent efforts and ongoing commitment by our high school staff in supporting a dynamic curriculum, rigorous instruction, and high expectations for all of our students,” said Rodrigue. “It is so rewarding when the collective dedication of a faculty results in a quality educational program for our learners."

U.S. News also recognized the ability for students to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams at PHS, and reported that 50 percent of the student body takes advantage of the courses.

The Pomperaug student body makeup is 52 percent male and 48 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is seven percent, according to the U.S. News report.

PHS is the highest-ranking school in the area and across New Haven County. Locally, Brookfield, Masuk and Cheshire come in at #20 through #30. The top ranked school in the state was East Hartford’s Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy.
