The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection recommends that residents remove birdfeeders and secure any potential food sources. Bears have no problem snacking on trash, barbeque grill leftovers, compost and pet food.
In most situations bears will wander back to more secluded areas and they can often be scared away by loud noises. Bears were spotted more than 8,000 times in 2018. Sightings can be reported to DEEP.
