The man was also trying to steal drinks, police said.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A man who tried to steal 136 energy drinks and a single box of Cap'n Crunch tried to hide in the woods, but was eventually arrested by authorities near a local supermarket, police said.

At 1:51 p.m. on Tuesday, Stop & Shop security staffers contacted Southington police to report a shoplifting in progress. Security staff members said they observed a man, identified as 22-year-old James Garofano, of Northford, quickly loading Red Bull cases into a shopping cart, according to an arrest report.

A lone box of Cap'n Crunch cereal was in the cart too, police said.

Garofano then allegedly pushed the shopping cart out of the produce section and through the store doors while being followed by security staffers, according to an arrest report.

When store staffers asked to see a receipt, Garofano abandoned the shopping cart in the parking lot area and began running toward North Main Street and Curtiss Street.
