Loitering, Larceny Charges Filed After Incident At Southington School
A man is accused of trying to break into cars in a parking lot at a Southington school, police said.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Police in Southington said they apprehended a man who was trying to break into vehicles parked at a local elementary school Wednesday just before classes ended for the day.

According to an incident report, the man became argumentative when confronted by a staff members.

Officers located the man walking along South End Road, according to a report. He was later identified as 43-year-old Fernando Cutanda.
School staff members told police they saw Cutanda near the passenger side of a school employee's vehicle, pulling on the door handle, according to a report. School staff members then approached Cutanda after he walked to the rear of the school building and attempted to remove a bicycle from a rack, according to a report.

When approached by officers, Cutanda continued to be uncooperative, argumentative, and stated he was a "cop in New York," according to a report. Cutanda refused to provide identification and gave police a false name and date-of-birth, according to a report.
Police searched Cutanda and found a carpenter's hammer tucked into his pants, according to a report. He also had on. him a broken glass bottle neck and a broken steak knife blade, according to a report.
Police were able to identify Cutanda through fingerprints, according to a report. He was found to have an extensive criminal history in New York and Massachusetts, along with an active arrest warrant in Connecticut out of New London for failure to appear in court for a larceny case, records show.
Cutanda was charged in Southington with criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny, criminal impersonation, loitering/remaining on school grounds, and breach of peace. Cutanda was being held on a $25,000 cash/surety bond and was to appear in court Thursday, police said. He was also detained for the New London Warrant on a $3,000 bond, police said.
