Massive Fire At Southington Business Closes Roads, Prompts Shutdowns: Authorities

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Emergency crews responded to a working fire Saturday morning at Chuck and Eddie's Used Auto Parts, prompting road closures and the temporary shutdown of the Southington Transfer Station.

The Southington Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2033 reported a working fire at 450 Old Turnpike Road.

According to the union, mutual aid is being provided by Meriden Fire Local 1148 and Bristol Firefighters IAFF Local 773 on scene.

Town coverage is being provided by the City of New Britain Fire Department, Cheshire Fire Department, and Plainville Fire Company.

Chuck and Eddie's Used Auto Parts operates an auto salvage and auto parts business on Old Turnpike Road and is one of three Connecticut locations operated by the company.

The Southington Police Department announced that Old Turnpike Road was closed between Mulberry Street and Rejean Road while firefighters and other emergency personnel worked at the scene.

Police urged motorists to avoid the area and said the nearby Southington Transfer Station would remain closed for the rest of the day.

In a separate notice, the Town of Southington Highway and Parks Department said the transfer station was closed effective 9:48 a.m. Saturday to protect the public and employees and to allow emergency responders to operate without interference.

"Due to a nearby business fire, the transfer station will be CLOSED effective 9:48 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th to ensure public and worker safety and allow emergency responders to operate unimpeded," the department stated.

Town officials said transfer station operations are expected to resume next week.

No information about injuries, the cause of the fire, or the extent of damage was immediately available Saturday morning.

Emergency crews remained on scene as response efforts continued.
