SOUTHINGTON, CT — Local recreation officials said Monday that the ice at two prominent ponds/lakes in Southington is now safe to use.

Southington Assistant Recreation Director David Voisine said Memorial Pond is now open for skating and ice hockey and has been since Saturday, Jan. 31.

Meanwhile, he said, Crescent Lake, a popular ice fishing haunt, is now open as of today, Feb. 2.

"Crews will be checking the ice daily, and we will not only be updating our Facebook page, but also the town rec department website," said Voisine.

Last week, an inspection of the areas by town staff revealed a thick layer of snow, caused by the recent snowstorm, actually insulating the ice.

That meant a thick layer of slush and water underneath, and the ice was deemed "unstable," despite the frigid temperatures.

Follow-up work and inspections, however, revealed that the ice is stabilized and is safe to use.
