Southington Library's Artist Of The Month Is An Old Friend

Her exhibit of lighthouse paintings will be on display at the library all through February.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The retired director of the Southington Public Library has an art exhibit at her former place of employment that aims to turn even the biggest landlubbers into old salts.

That's because Sue Smayda, the library's executive director from 2007-18, just so happens to be the Southington Public Library's February artist of the month.

As a result, her large collection of lighthouse paintings are on display throughout the library, 255 Main St., Southington, and they will continue to be displayed through month's end.

While library arts was her vocation, after retirement, art in general became Smayda's avocation.

According to the library, she studied art history after retiring and, even, became a docent at the New Britain Museum of American Art.

This love of art then fused with her fascination of lighthouses, a personal interest that dates back to her family vacations to Cape Cod, and created a large quantity of scenic, lighthouse portraits.

This exhibit is on display during the regular business hours of the library, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The gallery is located on the main level near the café.
